For this Google case study, we’ll use startup Car Shipping Carriers owned by Nick who was referred to our SEO services after hearing about us at a flag football party. He was interested in launching his car shipping business and needed help with an SEO campaign and lead generation. We began this journey together on February 1, 2012.

Phase 1: Keyword Research
Since Nick was just starting out and his budget was limited, our game plan targeted the low hanging fruit. We began our keyword research, and found ‘cheap car shipping’ to be a nice keyword phrase to target with an average monthly search volume of 1,260:
Phase 2: Landing Page Analysis
During our landing page analysis, we discovered a very important issue called “keyword cannibalization.” Keyword cannibalization is when a single term or keyword phrase is found on multiple pages of the website. In this SEO case study, you can see how this website’s information architecture calls for “cheap car shipping” on multiple pages:
Basically, all these pages are eating one another’s authority, hence, the cannibalization. Search engines will have a hard time determining which page to rank for the main targeted term “cheap car shipping” since it’s also in the page title and URL of multiple pages. Over 200 ranking signals help determine a page’s authority within Google, and these pages were basically competing for the winning spot.
Phase 3: Landing Page Implementation
We rewrote the landing page after compiling the keyword group for ‘cheap car shipping,’ optimized all of the pages into a single landing page, ensured the keywords were within the page title and page description, and optimized the URL structure to /cheap-car-shipping-companies-prices-rates-quotes/. Then last, but not least, we implemented 301 redirects for all the other pages and removed them from the website.

Phase 4: Result Tracking
After we implement new landing pages, and ensure the old ones are 301 redirected, we start tracking the results within Google Analytics, Webmaster Tools and a third party SEO analytical web application. We’ve been able to rank, and sustain one of the top 3 positions for these particular keyword phrases for quite some time:
Tracking the rankings of keywords is great and all; however, we prefer to pay close attention to the growth from our ranking results within our Google Analytics year-over-year.

For a startup, their budget was extremely low; therefore, we were not able to utilize all of our abilities at once, but we could at least put a plan together that worked within their budget:
